The Divine Intervention – Goddess Mazu in Kuala Terengganu

The Goddess Mazu, a Chinese sea goddess, is the goddess most celebrated in modern times, with the number of her devotees currently estimated at over 100 million and more than 1,500 temples devoted to her worship.

Known by many names and titles, her name Mazu (Ma Tsu), means mother. Like Kuan Yin she is a goddess of compassion, one who is willing to intercede on the behalf of those in distress. But she is also revered for her courage, her willingness to fight for her principles.

Mazu Statue project in Kudat is the brainchild of Tan Sri Chong Kah Kiat, the former Sabah Chief Minister. Tan Sri Chong was Deputy Chief Minister and holding the Minister of Tourism, Environment and Culture in the Sabah state cabinet when he resigned in protest from all governmental position when the government under Musa Aman ban the construction of the world’s tallest Taoist Goddess of the Sea statue in Kudat.

The stoppage order was sudden and out from nowhere. The Kudat Municipal Council, the local authority, just stopped the building of the worlds tallest Mazu statue just like that. In fact the statue was at 60% completion stage. Workers had completed the platform when the state government ordered work be halted.

The funny thing is that initially, local authorities in the fishing village of Kudat in Sabah state had approved construction of the 36-metre (108-foot) Mazu statue in December 2005.

Now the story going around is that the Umno candidate for the Kuala Terenganu by-election Datuk Wan Ahmad Farid Wan Salleh is said to be one of the main players putting his foot down to stop this Mazu Project when he was still the former political secretary to the prime minister.

Well, if the 8000+ Chinese voters in Kuala Terenganu come to know that Datuk Wan Ahmad Farid Wan Salleh had a role to play in the stoppage of the worlds tallest Goddess of the Sea statue in Kudat, will they still vote him in to be their next Member of Parliament? Chinese voters may just sit up and take note.

Here there is a blackout of news coverage on the mainstream newspapers on Tan Sri Chong Kah Kiat suit against Musa Aman Khan for Abuse of Power. I think the government is afraid the chinese voters in KT might be influence and therefore the blackout was in place so that chinese voters would not be influenced in their voting.

There is nothing about the suit in the Star, NST and all the other malay papers all though it is news worthy.
